Catalonia leaders jailed for sedition by Spanish court

Spain’s Supreme Court on Monday sentenced nine Catalan leaders to between nine and 13 years in prison for sedition over their role in a bid for independence in October 2017, Reuters reports.

The three other defendants in the landmark ruling were found guilty only of disobedience and not sentenced to prison.

The former head of Catalonia’s regional government, Carles Puigdemont, said the prison sentences were an “atrocity.”

The prosecution had sought up to 25 years in prison for Oriol Junqueras, the former vice-president of Catalonia and the highest-ranking pro-independence leader on trial.
