Karabakh ex-Defense Minister Samvel Babayan handed a six-year jail term

Nagorno Karabakh’s ex-Defense Minister Samvel Babayan has been sentenced to six years in prison.

The Court of General Jurisdiction of Yerevan’s Kentron and Nork-Marash Administrative District found him guilty of illegal procurement, transportation or carrying of weapons, ammunition, explosives or explosive devices (Article 235.2 of the Armenian Criminal Code) and legitimizing illegally obtained income (Article 190.1).

Samvel Babayan, who served as Defense Minister of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic from 1994 to 2000, was arrested on March 22 under a criminal case instigated on the illegal smuggling of Igla antiaircraft missile complex.

Four others co-defenders in the case were handed different prison terms.
