There was no alternative to the withdrawal of protocols

We had to withdraw from the Armenian-Turkish process long ago, analyst Vardan Khachatryan says. He considers the process contained a serious threat to us.

“From the very beginning Turkey attempted to link the normalization of the Armenian-Turkish relations to the Karabakh issue,” he said, adding that “this is the greatest threat to us on the field of international relations. ”

He said “the Karabakh issue could be subordinated to the normalization of the Armenian-Turkish relations for the sake of interests of some countries.” Therefore, Khachatryan welcomes the recall of the protocols.

Member of the Republican faction, MP Levon Martirosyan is confident that the Armenian-Turkish normalization process has had its positive role and will continue so, irrespective of the fact whether they are ratified or not.

“Turkey did nothing towards ratification of the protocols. Therefore, the Armenian President’s decision to recall them from the National Assembly was logical,” he said. Martirosyan added, however, that this does not exclude initiating a new process at some point in the future.

According to Vardan Khachatryan, there are many worrisome issues in such processes. “The most important is that we should be confident that our country will not be manipulated under the conditions of open borders. This is especially important after the Syria events,” he noted.

Both say the process cannot be considered over. They do not rule out that the Armenian-Turkish relations will once be normalized through similar protocols.
