Russian FM, UNESCO chief discuss settlement of humanitarian situation in Karabakh

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov discussed with UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay the use of the organization’s potential in the protection of cultural monuments and religious sites in the zone of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

“Special attention was paid to the possibilities of using the potential of UNESCO to assist in resolving the humanitarian situation in the zone of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, in particular in the field of protection of cultural monuments and religious sites affected by hostilities and acts of vandalism, as well as in the field of the restoration of educational systems in the region,” the Ministry said.

The Russian side expressed support for Azoulay’s initiative to send a preliminary mission to the region to explore the practical perspectives of working in the above-mentioned areas in coordination with the interested parties.
