Armenian Parliamen passes draft law on “Military Service and Status of Servicemen”

The Armenian National Assembly voted 89 to 9 today to pass the draft law on “Military Service and Status of Servicemen” at first reading. Yelk bloc voted against the bill.

The law sets the types of military service and regulates the organization and implementation of the military service of the citizens of the Republic of Armenia within the framework of their duties to participate in the defense of the country.

It also covers the relations connected with the legal and social guarantees to servicemen and their families.

The adoption of the bill aims to improve the effectiveness of defense in peacetime and during war, raise the level of trust among the society in the compulsory military service,  promote the willingness to start compulsory or contract-based military service, contribute to the full implementation of the “Nation-Army” concept.
