FIDE World Cup: Armenia’s Aronian reaches quarterfinals

Armenia’s leading Grandmaster Levon Aronyan has reached the quarterfinals of the FIDE World Cup.

Levon Aronian and Le Quang Liem of Vietnam drew both rapid games. Aronian was at risk of losing the second game, but luck was on his side.

The Armenian prevailed in 10-minute games and advanced to the next round. He will face Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France in the next round.

Defending champion Levon Aronian is looking to get a third World Cup victory after having won the event in 2005 and 2017

The FIDE World Cup is taking place in Khanty-Mansiysk. It is a seven-round knock-out event for 128 players, with a total prize fund of US$ 1.6 million and a first prize of US$ 110,000.
