Henrikh Mkhitaryan wins February Goal of the Month

Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s goal against SFC Schalke 04 has been voted February’s Goal of the Month.

Football purists may say there were technically more complicated goals scored in the Bundesliga in February, but for what Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s goal meant – to him and his side – there was really no rival, according to Bundesliga’s official website.

The Armenian could hardly have timed his first goal of the season any better. His arrival into the box and onto the list of season scorers was perfection personified, and meant the world to the 26-year-old and most of the 80,000 others in the Signal Iduna Park.

“Mkhitaryan’s eyes instantly glazed over and he almost fought back the tears as he was smothered by his team-mates and a conglomeration of emotion. What he had just done was enough to catapult him to legend status, if he was not already worthy of that billing from his first 18 months in a BVB shirt.

“I think everybody wanted to jump on top of him. “It’s a wonder they didn’t flatten him!” said Dortmund coach Jürgen Klopp. “We’ve kept on telling him how great he is and how important he is for us,” added captain Mats Hummels. “We’re just delighted now that he can put his name in the statistics under goalscorers. He’s already looking much more relaxed.”
