Verzhine Svazlian honored on her 80th birthday

Ethnographer and folklorist Verjine Svazlian’s 80th birthday was celebrated at the National Library of Armenia today. Born 20 years after the Armenian Genocide, she is an author of more than 500 scientific publications and 25 books published in different languages in Armenia, Diaspora and abroad.

The Svazlian family was one of the first in the Diaspora to return to the Motherland. Starting in 1955, Verzhine Svazlian has been writing down, recording and publishing the testimonies of genocide survivors from Armenia and the Diaspora from more than 150 settlements of historic Armenia. She has dedicated 55 years to save the tragic and heroic excerpts in the history of the Armenian people. She has presented the collective memory of the Armenian people to the world and the judgment of the humanity in different languages.

The Turkish-language version of Verzhine Svazlian’s book, Armenian Genocide: Testimonies of Eye-Witness Survivors, was recently published by Turkish Begle publishing house, headed by Ragip Zarakolu.
