Paruyr Hayrikyan shot, taken to hospital

Armenian presidential candidate and leader of the National Self-Determination Union Paruyr Hayrikyan was shot in central Yerevan shortly before midnight Friday.

He was transported to the St. Gregory the Illuminator Hospital.

Chief of RA Police Vladimir Gasparyan, Head of the Yerevan Police Nerses Nazaryan, and more than 20 policemen, representatives of the Rescue Service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations have arrived at the site of the crime.

An investigation is underway to establish the circumstances of the crime and the identity of the shooter.

Hospital officials say  that at 11:55 p.m. Hayrikyan was admitted to the hospital with a gunshot wound to his right clavicle.

Emergency room reports indicate that his life is not in danger. Hayrikyan has not lost consciousness, and there is still no need for a surgery.

Meanwhile, a number of politicians and senior government officials visited Hayrikyan at the hospital. Among them were Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan and Deputy Parliament Speaker Edward Sharmazanov, as well as two other major opposition contenders in the current presidential race – Heritage Party leader Raffi Hovannisyan and Liberty Party chairman Hrant Bagratyan.
