The Guardian: Henrik Mkhitaryan orchestrates Shakhtar Donetsk’s great leap forward

“Chelsea will have to watch the Armenia forward who has blossomed since taking over Jádson’s creative role,” writes The Guardian ahead of the match between Shakhtar Donetsk and London’s Chelsea in the Champions League.

“Henrik Mkhitaryan is only 23 but this year he will almost certainly win his third Armenian player of the year award. Mkhitaryan’s potential has been clear for some time – and he was a key figure as Armenia briefly threatened to derail Ireland’s qualification for the Euros – but it is this season, since the departure of Jádson, that he has really blossomed at Shakhtar Donetsk,” the article reads.

Reminding that Mkhitaryan has scored 14 goals in 12 games, The Guardian notes that “Aram Khachaturian’s Sabre Dance, the Armenian war dance played each time Mkhitaryan scores, may have become the most popular tune at the Donbass Arena this season.”
