Member of German Bundestag condemns Azeri aggression against Karabakh

Albert Weiler, member of the German Bundestag (Christian Democratic Union) and Chairman of the German-Armenian Forum, has issued a statement, strongly condemning the Azerbaijani attacks in Nagorno-Karabakh.

“I condemn the Azerbaijani attacks against Nagorno-Karabakh in the strongest terms. It is unfortunate that while the civilian population was attacked in Karabakh – several civilians including a 12-year-old child were killed.

The military escalation at the line of contact between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan is a sign that the ceasefire agreement is not respected. Thus, Azerbaijan violated the peace process within the framework of the Minsk Group. I also regret that the Azerbaijani aggression is supported by the Turkish leadership.

I call on the sides to stop military actions immediately and to respect the ceasefire. There is no alternative to a peaceful solution. I therefore support the demand of our Federal Foreign Minister Steinmeier to return to the negotiations within the Minsk Group. The co-chairs have our full support. I hope that our government can utilize the German OSCE chairmanship for a peaceful dialogue between the conflicting parties.

The subject is close to my heart – I have been in Karabakh and observed the situation on the ground. I have repeatedly pointed out that the democratic developments are to be supported in this country. Violence is by no means a solution. In this difficult time, my thoughts are with the victims and their families on both sides. ”
