Strong Armenia candidate Davit Ghazinyan detained on vote-buying Charges

Davit Ghazinyan, a parliamentary candidate from the Strong Armenia alliance, has been detained on charges of preparing to distribute electoral bribes Armenpress quotes the Armenia’s Anti-Corruption Committee as saying.

Earlier, the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) approved motions submitted by the Prosecutor’s Office seeking consent to initiate criminal proceedings against Ghazinyan and to deprive him of his liberty.

The Prosecutor’s Office had submitted the motions to the CEC on June 6, requesting authorization to bring criminal charges against the candidate and place him under detention.

Also on June 6, the Anti-Corruption Committee announced that it had uncovered a new alleged case of vote-buying involving members of the Strong Armenia alliance. Following the discovery, the Committee petitioned the Prosecutor’s Office to seek the CEC’s consent for criminal prosecution and detention of Ghazinyan.

The case is being investigated within the framework of an ongoing criminal proceeding related to alleged electoral bribery during the election campaign.
