Armenian lawmakers consider establishing Navasard Day

The Armenian Parliament on Tuesday discussed in the first reading a bill that would designate August 11 as the Day of National Traditions, Culture and Armenian Unity, reviving the spirit of Navasard, the ancient Armenian New Year.

The proposal, introduced by MP Gegham Nazaryan, seeks to enshrine the date in the Law on Holidays and Commemoration Days. The observance would remain a working day and would focus on promoting Armenian traditions, cultural heritage and national unity.

According to the author, celebrating Navasard in a modern format could help strengthen awareness of national values and encourage greater engagement with the Armenian Diaspora, particularly by promoting summer visits to Armenia.

The draft law was positively assessed by the National Assembly Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs. Committee member Alkhaz Ghazaryan called on lawmakers to support the initiative.

Presenting the government’s position, Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Lusine Kocharyan said a number of recommendations had been put forward and would be discussed before the bill’s second reading.
