Donald Trump says the US and Iran are “very close” to making a deal and that talks could resume as early as this weekend, the BBC reports.
It comes as a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon has taken effect.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says it will create an opportunity for a “historic peace agreement” with Lebanon.
Iran-backed Hezbollah has agreed to abide by the ceasefire, while demanding it must include “a comprehensive halt to attacks across all Lebanese territory” and “no freedom of movement for Israeli forces.”
The US president calls it a “historic day” for Lebanon, and adds that he hopes Hezbollah “acts nicely” during the truce.
Israel and Hezbollah continued to trade strikes over the Lebanese border in the hours before the deal came into force at midnight local time (21:00 GMT).
Israel says its troops will remain in a 10km-deep (6.2 mile) “security zone” in southern Lebanon, and warns residents not to return to the area.
Meanwhile, the UK and France will chair a meeting on freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz later on Friday – around 40 countries are expected to participate.
