Azerbaijan has begun evacuating its diplomatic personnel from Iran over security concerns, officials said on Friday.
Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov stated that staff from Azerbaijan’s Embassy in Tehran and its Consulate General in Tabriz are being withdrawn for safety reasons following an order by President Ilham Aliyev.
The decision follows reports from Baku that four Iranian drones crossed the border into the Nakhijevan exclave on Thursday. According to Azerbaijani authorities, the drones injured four people and struck civilian facilities, including the regional airport and areas close to a school. Azerbaijan has condemned the incident as a breach of international law and said it will consider appropriate measures in response.
Iran has rejected the accusations, insisting that it does not carry out attacks against neighboring countries. Officials in Tehran say the circumstances surrounding the reported drone crossings remain unclear.
