Samvel Karapetyan to be placed back in custody

The Anti-Corruption Court of Appeal has overturned a decision by Anti-Corruption Court Judge Sargis Petrosyan that had placed Samvel Karapetyan, founder of the Tashir Group of Companies, under house arrest.

According to Armenpress, the Anti-Corruption Court confirmed that under the new ruling, Karapetyan has been placed in pre-trial detention for a period of two months.

Earlier, the court had partially granted a motion filed by Karapetyan’s defense team, replacing his pre-trial detention with house arrest and bail.

Samvel Karapetyan has been charged with making public calls to seize power and overthrow the constitutional order. On October 13, Armenia’s Investigative Committee announced that the charges against Karapetyan had been amended to include additional counts under Article 296, Part 3, Points 2 and 3 of the Criminal Code, which relate to money laundering on an especially large scale through the use of official or service-related authority or influence.

Karapetyan has denied all charges brought against him.
