Polls close in Armenia’s parliamentary elections, vote counting underway

Voting has concluded in Armenia’s parliamentary elections, with all 2,005 polling stations across the country closing at 8:00 p.m. local time.

The vote-counting process is now underway as election officials begin tallying ballots cast in the country’s first regular parliamentary elections since 2017.

According to the Central Electoral Commission (CEC), voter turnout stood at 1,224,957 by 5:00 p.m., representing 48.92 percent of Armenia’s 2,503,976 eligible voters.

The CEC has been releasing turnout figures at three-hour intervals throughout election day. Final turnout data, reflecting participation at the close of polling, is expected to be published at 9:00 p.m.

Eighteen political forces are competing for seats in the National Assembly in a vote closely watched both domestically and internationally. Preliminary results are expected later in the evening as ballot counting progresses across the country.
