Armenia’s Central Electoral Commission (CEC) has approved the Prosecutor General’s Office request to authorize criminal prosecution against Narek Karapetyan, an MP-elect from the Strong Armenia alliance.
The information was confirmed to Armenpress by Lusine Martirosyan, Adviser to the Prosecutor General.
Martirosyan said the Prosecutor General’s Office had submitted two motions to the CEC: one seeking authorization to initiate criminal proceedings against Karapetyan and another requesting permission to deprive him of his liberty.
According to her, only the first motion – the request to authorize criminal prosecution—has been considered so far.
“The motion has been granted,” Martirosyan said.
Earlier, Aram Vardevanyan, a lawyer and representative of the Strong Armenia alliance, stated that the criminal proceedings against Karapetyan are linked to charges brought against Alik Aleksanyan, another representative of the alliance.
The Prosecutor General’s Office had previously said that, in the interests of the ongoing investigation, it would not comment on the criminal case under which the motions to authorize prosecution and detention had been submitted to the CEC.
On July 21, the CEC allocated parliamentary mandates following the June 7 parliamentary elections. Narek Karapetyan was among those awarded a seat from the Strong Armenia alliance’s electoral list.
