The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has secured a majority after the country’s landmark election, the BBC reports.
The BNP has now secured 151 out of the 300 seats – the number needed for it to form the next government.
Jamaat-e-Islami is in second place with 46 seats.
This is the first election held in the country since student-led protests in 2024 ended the 15-year rule of its increasingly autocratic leader, Sheikh Hasina.
As many as 1,400 protesters were killed during the uprising – with Hasina accused of having directly ordered the crackdown, an allegation she denies.
Hasina’s party, the Awami League, was banned from contesting this election.
