Typhoon Kalmaegi, Asia’s most powerful tropical storm this year, makes landfall in Vietnam, the BBC reports.
Kalmaegi has already killed at least 114 people and drowned entire towns in the Philippines.
Vietnam – already battling record rains and floods – has been warned to expect waves of up to 8m in some areas.
Six airports in the country have been forced to close – hundreds of flights will be affected, the government warns.
Calling Kalmaegi a “very abnormal” storm, Vietnam’s Deputy PM Tran Hong Ha urges local officials to treat it with urgency.
