U.S. urges citizens to leave Iran for Armenia or Türkiye

The United States has called on its citizens in Iran to depart the country immediately, citing heightened security concerns, transportation disruptions, and continued restrictions on communications.

In a security alert issued Thursday, U.S. authorities warned of increased security measures across Iran, including road closures, public transportation interruptions, flight cancellations, and widespread internet and phone service blockages. Americans in the country were advised to prepare alternative means of communication and avoid demonstrations while monitoring local developments.

Washington specifically pointed to land routes through Armenia and Türkiye as viable departure options, if travelers believe it is safe to leave.

The State Department said the Armenian border crossing at Agarak/Norduz remains open. U.S. citizens entering Armenia from Iran must hold a valid U.S. passport and can stay visa-free for up to 180 days. Dual nationals may enter using American, Iranian, or Armenian passports without advance approval.
