French PM Lecornu survives no-confidence votes after pension reform concession

France’s reappointed Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu survived successive no-confidence votes in the National Assembly on Thursday, drawing enough support from moderates to avert a second government collapse in as many weeks.

Lecornu’s offer to suspend an unpopular pension reform helped sway the opposition Socialists, giving his government a lifeline in the deeply fragmented chamber.

The French government will now have to work to find compromise with MPs to settle on a budget before the end of the year.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu promised he would not be using Article 49.3 of the country’s constitution, which allows governments to force legislation through parliament without a vote.
