The old city under Yerevan’s Republic Square could be restored, Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport Arayik Harutyunyan has said.
The perspectives of implementing the project are now being discussed with specialists, the Minister said in a Facebook post.
“This could become a reality soon,” he captioned photos of the underground city.
The Minister refrained from providing further details.
The restoration works in 2003 revealed remains of stone walls, tiles of black and red tuff, pieces of clay jugs, and clay water pipes under the Republic Square in the heart of Yerevan.
Archaeologists said the structures found in the area were part of 17th-century buildings depicted by French travelers Jean-Baptiste Tavernier and Jean Chardin in their panoramic drawings of Yerevan.
