Human skeleton, medieval game pieces and Queen Tamar coin discovered at Amberd Fortress

Interesting archaeological finds have been uncovered during restoration and cleaning works at the historic Amberd Fortress, according to Armenia’s Preservation Service SNCO under the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports.

Among the discoveries is a human skeleton found on the outer side of the fortress’s inner tower wall, approximately one meter east of its central section. Archaeologists say nearly 90 percent of the bones were found in place, with only the finger bones missing. Based on the condition of the teeth, researchers believe the individual was a young adult.

The excavations have also revealed what are believed to be pieces from the medieval game tama, a board game similar to checkers, providing evidence of leisure activities practiced during the Middle Ages.

Another significant discovery is a coin of Queen Tamar, regarded as an artifact of exceptional historical value.

Restoration, cleaning and archaeological works at Amberd Fortress are continuing, with specialists expecting to uncover further details about the history and everyday life of the medieval stronghold.
