Armenia’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Greece, Tigran Mkrtchyan, held meetings with Central Macedonia Regional Governor Athina Edona Athanasiadou and Thessaloniki Mayor Stelios Angeloudis during a working visit to Thessaloniki.
According to the Armenian Embassy in Greece, the discussions focused on prospects for interregional and decentralized cooperation between Armenia and Greece.
During the meeting with Governor Athanasiadou, the sides explored opportunities for cooperation in three key areas – innovative technologies, tourism, and culture. In this context, they highlighted the bilateral potential for jointly participating in various European Union programs and initiatives.
Talks with Mayor Angeloudis centered on events organized and planned throughout the year through the joint efforts of the Armenian Embassy in Greece and the Honorary Consulate of Armenia in Thessaloniki, including activities dedicated to the 35th anniversary of Armenia’s independence. The sides also discussed the possibility of celebrating bilateral city days.
Special emphasis was placed on introducing new approaches to showcasing Thessaloniki’s rich Armenian heritage, particularly in light of the significant increase in tourism to Greece’s second-largest city and surrounding regions during the summer season, including from Armenia.
Ambassador Mkrtchyan also briefed his interlocutors on regional developments, Armenia’s efforts toward regional unblocking and normalization of relations with neighboring countries, as well as recent achievements in Armenia-Greece bilateral relations.
The ambassador thanked Mayor Angeloudis for hosting the unique exhibition titled “Greek and Armenian Mythology Through the Eyes of Children” at the Thessaloniki City Hall in February 2026. The exhibition, organized within the framework of the “Universe Art” international competition-festival, featured around 100 artworks created by Armenian art school students aged 5 to 18.
The meetings were also attended by Armenia’s Honorary Consul in Thessaloniki, Akis Dagazian.
