Armenia moves to boost transit freight transport through its territory

The Armenian government has approved a measure aimed at encouraging international freight transit through the country by reducing road tax obligations for certain foreign-registered trucks.

Under the decision, the government has defined the countries of registration, categories, and number of heavy-duty vehicles eligible for a reduced road tax rate when entering Armenia either for transit to third countries or for transport operations involving Armenian territory.

As part of the initiative, road tax payers carrying out freight transportation under the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC) Permit system and the multilateral permit system of the European Conference of Ministers of Transport (ECMT) will be exempt from paying Armenia’s road tax.

The government expects the measure to stimulate transit freight transportation through Armenia by trucks registered in other countries and traveling to third-country destinations.

Officials also believe the decision will strengthen Armenia’s position within international transport corridors and enhance the country’s reputation as a reliable transit and logistics hub.

The initiative forms part of broader efforts to improve regional connectivity, facilitate international trade flows, and increase Armenia’s integration into global and regional transportation networks.
