Palestinians are beginning to return to Gaza’s north as the Israeli military says a ceasefire is now in effect, the BBC reports.
Forces have pulled back to the lines agreed under the Trump plan, the IDF says – but will continue to “remove any immediate threat.”
In a statement released on Telegram, the IDF said troops “began positioning themselves along the updated deployment lines” from 12:00 local time (09:00 GMT).
“IDF troops in the Southern Command are deployed in the area and will continue to remove any immediate threat,” the statement added.
Hamas now has 72 hours to release all Israeli hostages, while Israel will release hundreds of Palestinian detainees.
It comes after the Israeli government approved the first phase of Donald Trump’s ceasefire and hostage return deal.
Under the deal, aid trucks are expected to start surging into help Gaza’s two million people, most of whom have been displaced.
