Leader of the opposition movement Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan has been detained, his lawyer Sergey Harutyunyan told reporters.
The arrest followed a court-sanctioned search of the Archbishop’s residence, after which he was taken to the Investigative Committee for questioning. Harutyunyan confirmed that law enforcement officers carried out the search and detained the clergyman in accordance with the decision of the court.
Earlier, Armenia’s Investigative Committee issued a statement saying that the leaders of the Srbazan Paykar (Sacred Struggle) movement had been preparing terrorist acts and actions aimed at the violent seizure of power. The committee also released audio recordings purportedly involving the movement’s leadership.
