One person dead after car drives into crowd in German city of Mannheim

One person has been killed and several others injured after a car drove into a crowd in the western German city of Mannheim, police say, the BBC reports.

A suspect has been arrested, police add, and a large operation is under way in the city center.

The incident occurred as crowds gathered in cities across regions including Germany’s Rhineland for parades to mark the carnival season.

A black SUV drove at high speed into people, travelling from the centrally located Paradeplatz square towards the city’s landmark water tower.

People have been asked to avoid the area as emergency services attend the scene.
