Russia remains ready to assist in the peaceful settlement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, but also welcomes independent steps by the parties, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said at a briefing with journalists.
The comments come after Armenian Parliament Speaker Alen Simonyan said that Russia’s participation in the settlement is “unlikely” due to “bad memories” of the past experience.
“We have heard statements from Yerevan at various levels that, in fact, there is no need for mediators. Both Yerevan and Baku are already capable of continuing negotiations on their own until the finalization of this process,” Peskov noted. “While maintaining our readiness to provide any possible assistance, we will welcome their independent efforts.”
The Kremlin representative said the most important is for the South Caucasus to remain predictable, peaceful and truly turn into a region of prosperity and cooperation.
