Armenia can consider withdrawal of Russian border guards if relations with Turkey are normalized – FM

Armenia can consider withdrawing Russian border guards from the Armenian-Turkish border if trustworthy relations are established between Yerevan and Ankara, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan said at a press conference today.

“Russian border guards were temporarily stationed at Zvartnots airport and on the border with Iran and offered their services to Armenia until Armenia developed all necessary institutions and develop skill to do it on its own. At some point, we thanked the Russian border guards and said we are able to carry out service in Zvartnots and on the Armenian-Iranian border independently. If there is a functioning and open border between Armenia and Turkey, if there is trust, we will be able to discuss and consider this issue as well,” he said asked about the possible withdrawal of Russian border guards from the Armenian-Turkish border.

At the same tie, the Foreign Minister said the relocation of the Russian military base in Armenia is not on the agenda.
