Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has said that if Armenia’s Constitutional Court finds contradictions between the peace agreement signed with Azerbaijan and the country’s Constitution, he will personally initiate constitutional amendments.
“At this moment, there is no need to think about it. But if the Constitutional Court rules that the signed or initialed peace agreement contradicts the Constitution, I will take the initiative to introduce the necessary amendments,” Pashinyan said at a briefing with journalists.
The Prime Minister also reminded that the Government already has an agenda of adopting a new Constitution. He recalled that he had earlier mentioned 2027 as a possible timeline for this process.
“We are currently working on a draft of the new Constitution. Once it is ready, most likely we will proceed with a referendum. However, this process has no direct connection with the peace treaty, although from a strategic perspective it could have an impact,” Pashinyan noted.
