Armenian FM briefs EU special envoy on proposals submitted to Azerbaijan

On January 10, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan met with Magdalena Grono, EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the Crisis in Georgia.

The interlocutors discussed a wide range of issues on the Armenia-EU partnership agenda. Reference was made to the achievements recorded during the previous year, the process of discussions on the development of a new partnership agenda, and upcoming programs. Referring to the draft law “On the launch of the process of Armenia’s accession to the EU,” Minister Mirzoyan noted that the positive conclusion given by the Armenian Government yesterday goes in line with the dynamics of deepening of Armenia’s cooperation with the EU and its member states and the European aspirations of the Armenian citizens.

Ararat Mirzoyan and Magdalena Grono exchanged views on the prospects for further expansion of the partnership, given the opportunities provided by the existing toolkit. Among other mechanisms, he emphasized the importance of the activities of the EU Civilian Mission in Armenia.

The meeting also touched upon the security situation in the South Caucasus, the existing challenges, and the steps necessary to effectively overcome them. Minister Mirzoyan emphasized that in line with the vision of normalizing relations with neighbors and establishing peace in the region, the Armenian Government is making efforts towards reaching mutually acceptable solutions and ensuring long-term stability. In this context, the Armenian Foreign Minister presented the proposals submitted by Armenia for the finalization of the agreement on the normalization of relations with Azerbaijan, as well as for the unblocking of regional communications. Humanitarian issues were also touched upon.
