A meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and former US President Donald Trump during the upcoming September events in Beijing remains a possibility, the Kremlin said on Monday.
However, there is no confirmation yet that Trump plans to attend the ceremonies marking the 80th anniversary of the victory over militarist Japan.
“We are preparing for the trip to Beijing,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters during a briefing. “It is indeed on the President’s agenda. But we haven’t heard that President Trump is also planning to go to Beijing.”
Commenting on the prospect of a bilateral meeting between the two leaders, Peskov noted that such a possibility could not be ruled out if Trump were to attend the commemorative events.
“If it so happens that he is there as well, then it cannot be excluded that the question of the advisability of holding a meeting will arise,” Peskov said.
China is planning a series of high-level events in September to commemorate the end of World War II in Asia. While the Kremlin has confirmed Putin’s participation, Trump’s potential involvement remains uncertain.
No official announcement has been made by Trump or his representatives regarding a trip to China.
