Armenian Ambassador highlights child rights reforms at UNICEF event in Greece

Armenia’s Ambassador to Greece, Tigran Mkrtchyan, participated in a high-level event on children’s rights organized by the Greece office of UNICEF at the International Hellenic University in Thessaloniki.

The event brought together ambassadors from various countries, representatives of international organizations, and experts in the field to discuss current challenges and best practices in protecting children’s rights. Ambassador Mkrtchyan chaired one of the panel discussions and delivered remarks on Armenia’s ongoing efforts to strengthen child protection.

In his speech, the ambassador highlighted key reforms undertaken by Armenia in recent years, including the adoption of the Law on the Rights of the Child and the Child Protection System in 2025. He also outlined programs being implemented in the areas of education, healthcare, and social protection to improve the well-being of children across the country.

Mkrtchyan praised the strong partnership between Armenia and UNICEF, emphasizing the organization’s significant contribution to advancing children’s rights, inclusive education, healthcare services, and social support systems.

Particular attention was given to protecting children in the digital environment, online safety, and the need for greater international cooperation to address challenges posed by disinformation and other emerging threats affecting children.

The ambassador also highlighted initiatives being carried out in Armenian schools and higher education institutions to promote children’s rights. He noted that, at the initiative of Armenia’s Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport, the 2025–2026 academic year has been declared the “Year of a Safe and Secure Educational Environment” within the country’s general education system.

Participants exchanged views on existing challenges in child rights protection, shared best practices, and explored opportunities for enhanced multilateral cooperation in safeguarding children’s rights worldwide.
