Ancient gold coins worth €600 000 stolen from French museum found in Russia

Russian police and Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) have found a collection of ancient gold coins on the one of the antique markets in Moscow, Russian Interior Ministry reported.

After historical expertise made by Russian State Historical Museum and consultations with Interpol, it was confirmed that this collection of 79 coins was stolen a while ago from the archeology and art museum in Saint-Remy in the city of Reims, France.

“Foreign colleagues confirmed the theft of gold coins, including rare ancient coins minted from the 1st to 5th century AD. The museum guard responsible for the theft was convicted. However, the stolen items were never recovered until now,” Russian Interior Ministry’s Spokeswoman Irina Volk said in a statement published.

The approximate value of found collection is about 55 million rubles (around €607 200), Russian Police said. Now Russian authorities are in touch with French colleagues on returning the collection to its permanent display in Saint-Remy.
