Armenian weightlifter Narek Mkrtchyan wins silver at World Youth Championships

Armenian weightlifter Narek Mkrtchyan claimed a silver medal at the IWF World Youth Championships underway in Ismailia, Egypt.

Competing in the men’s 79 kg category, Mkrtchyan finished with a total of 336 kg in the combined event, lifting 150 kg in the snatch and 186 kg in the clean and jerk. He also secured a bronze medal in the clean and jerk discipline after successfully lifting 182 kg and 186 kg overhead.

In the women’s 69 kg competition, Armenia’s Mary Misakyan placed sixth with a total of 209 kg. She recorded 94 kg in the snatch and 115 kg in the clean and jerk.

Earlier in the championships, Armenia’s Narek Grigoryan won gold in the snatch event in the men’s 71 kg category with a lift of 144 kg. However, he failed to register a successful attempt in the clean and jerk.

In the same weight category, Armenian lifter Hovhannes Hovhannisyan lifted 130 kg in the snatch and 171 kg in the clean and jerk, earning a silver medal in the latter discipline. He finished fourth overall with a combined total of 301 kg.

Armenia will also be represented at the championships by Valerik Movsisyan (94 kg), Grigor Ghazaryan (110 kg), and Gagik Mkrtchyan (+110 kg). In the women’s competition, Anna Amroyan (77 kg) and Emma Poghosyan (86 kg) are also set to compete.
