He was elected at a special sitting of the National Assembly with 28 votes today.

Bako Sahakyan’s candidacy was supported by Motherland, Democracy and ARF Dashnaktsutyun factions, as well as by Arsen Arstamyan – the only independent MP in the legislative body.

Four MPs cast their ballot in favor of the only other candidate –Edward Aghabekyan, nominated by Movement-88 faction.

Bako Sahakyan will remain in office until the term of the National Assembly of 6th convocation comes to an end in 2020.

According to the new Constitution adopted earlier this year, after 2020 the elections of the President and the National Assembly will be held simultaneously.
