Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has reaffirmed Armenia’s commitment to expanding regional connectivity, including with Türkiye and Azerbaijan, highlighting transport, energy and digital links as key components of the government’s Crossroads of Peace initiative.
Speaking after talks with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Yerevan on Thursday, Pashinyan said the two sides discussed the European Union’s support for connectivity projects aimed at fostering regional cooperation and economic integration.
The Prime Minister welcomed recent progress in the EU-Armenia connectivity agenda, pointing to the joint declaration on the EU-Armenia Connectivity Partnership adopted at the inaugural EU-Armenia Summit, as well as agreements signed last week in Brussels on feasibility studies for three Armenian border crossing points and two northern highways.
The agreements include letters of intent between Armenia, the European Commission, the European Investment Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development to support the implementation of the infrastructure projects.
Pashinyan also highlighted the strategic importance of energy connectivity, stressing that alongside improving transport links under the Crossroads of Peace initiative, Armenia seeks to expand regional energy cooperation, including with neighboring Türkiye and Azerbaijan.
He said the construction of electricity transmission lines and interconnectors could strengthen regional energy security while supporting the green transition.
The Prime Minister also identified the construction of energy storage facilities as one of Armenia’s strategic priorities, noting that the projects would enable the country to more effectively utilize electricity generated from renewable energy sources. He said the issue of EU support for the initiative was discussed during the meeting.
In addition to transport and energy, Pashinyan said Armenia is interested in deepening cooperation with the European Union in digital technologies, artificial intelligence and innovation, while creating conditions to attract greater European private investment.
He also underscored the importance of Armenia’s participation in the Black Sea submarine electricity and digital cable projects, describing them as significant for strengthening the country’s connectivity with Europe.
