Pashinyan, von der Leyen discuss economic cooperation, challenges facing Armenia

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen discussed economic cooperation and measures to address challenges facing Armenia during a phone conversation on Thursday.

According to the Armenian government, the two leaders exchanged views on ways to strengthen Armenia’s economic resilience and advance bilateral cooperation.

Von der Leyen reaffirmed the European Union’s commitment to supporting Armenia’s economic development and resilience. She informed Prime Minister Pashinyan that the EU is preparing a support package that will include more than €50 million in immediate financial assistance, as well as additional measures aimed at expanding export opportunities for Armenian products and facilitating trade.

The discussion also focused on practical support programs for various sectors of the Armenian economy, including agriculture and floriculture. In this context, the two sides emphasized the importance of creating new opportunities for Armenian products in European markets.

Pashinyan and von der Leyen underscored the need to deepen business ties and ensure the implementation of agreements reached during the recent Armenia-EU Summit in Yerevan, while advancing the broader Armenia-EU strategic agenda.

The leaders noted that support provided through the EU’s Resilience and Growth Plan has already contributed to the development of thousands of businesses and the creation of new jobs in Armenia.

The conversation also addressed initiatives being implemented under the Armenia-EU Connectivity Partnership. Von der Leyen reiterated the European Union’s readiness to support infrastructure projects and the development of regional connectivity.

The sides agreed to establish a joint Armenia-EU working group that will coordinate the implementation of ongoing programs and explore new areas of cooperation.
