Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has stated that Armenia is closely monitoring statements coming from the Islamic Republic of Iran and is taking all necessary steps to address Tehran’s concerns, reaffirming Yerevan’s commitment to maintaining strong, friendly, and brotherly relations with Iran.
His remarks came amid recent statements by Iran’s Ambassador to Armenia, Khalil Shirgholami. Earlier, the ambassador indirectly criticized the Armenian side for allowing protests to take place near the Iranian embassy in Yerevan, noting that Iranian officials had repeatedly conveyed their concerns to the relevant Armenian authorities.
The ambassador emphasized that Iran has stood by the Armenian people and government at various stages, adding that the events taking place near the embassy would remain in the historical memory of the Iranian people. He also warned that perceptions could form in Tehran that Armenia is becoming a center for forces hostile to Iran.
Responding to a question on these concerns during a briefing, Pashinyan said that Armenia is paying close attention to statements coming from Iran and has done, and will continue to do, everything possible to dispel the concerns of what he described as a friendly and brotherly country.
Addressing the protests near the Iranian embassy, the Prime Minister stressed that since 2018 Armenia has not banned rallies or demonstrations, as freedom of assembly is a fundamental democratic principle. He noted that authorities cannot apply different standards in individual cases.
At the same time, Pashinyan acknowledged that forms of expression should not interfere with the work of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s embassy or any other diplomatic mission. He said Armenian authorities are closely following the situation and will ensure, within the framework of democratic principles, that no obstacles arise to the embassy’s activities.
He added that individuals who cross legal boundaries will face appropriate legal action, noting that administrative proceedings have already been initiated in several cases.
Referring to issues related to the TRIPP arrangements, the Prime Minister recalled the visit of Iran’s President to Armenia in August, shortly after the Washington summit. He said the sides held lengthy and detailed discussions, during which Armenia provided comprehensive answers to questions raised by the Iranian leadership.
Pashinyan noted that Armenia remains in constant contact with Tehran and is ready to respond to any additional questions that may arise, including after the publication of official texts. He emphasized that Armenia takes into account the views and concerns of its international partners and seeks to arrive at balanced solutions.
