Armenia, Cyprus to realize untapped potential in defense cooperation – Suren Papikyan

Armenia and Cyprus are not only good friends, but also natural allies, and this visit is one of the important steps to turn friendly ties into strong interstate relations, Armenian Defense Minister Suren Papikyan said at a joint press conference with visiting Defense Minister of Cyprus Vasilis Palmas.

According to Papikyan, the parties discussed both the development of defense cooperation and security issues.

“We confirmed that although Armenia-Cyprus cooperation in the field of defense is at a high level and has been developing dynamically in recent years, we have a huge untapped potential that will be called to life in the near future,” Papikyan said and added that Armenian-Cypriot cooperation is aimed at the development of defense capabilities of both countries, strengthening of security and sovereignty, regional and international stability.

Minister Papikyan also attached importance to the trilateral cooperation in Armenia-Cyprus-Greece format, which, he said, is also aimed at the implementing joint goals of the three countries that share the same values, and resisting challenges.

Suren Papikyan commended the support of Cyprus to Armenia’s relations with EU and member states. The Armenian Defense Minister emphasized that Yerevan is closely following the developments taking place in the Eastern Mediterranean region.

“Armenia stands for the peaceful settlement of the Cyprus issue through negotiations based on the well-known principles of UN Resolutions,” the Armenian Defense Minister said.
