The Presidents of Armenia and Iran Armen Sarkissian and Hassan Rouhani discussed a wide range f issues on bilateral agenda as they met in Yerevan late on Monday.
Iran’s President has arrived in Armenia to participate in the extended sitting of the Supreme Economic Council of the Eurasian Economic Union.
Welcoming Rouhani to Armenia, President Sarkissian said: “Interesting times are coming, but we’ve lived interesting times together for thousands of years. And if people around the world are looking for examples of friendly, fraternal relationships, the history of our nations is a good example. As President of the Republic, I am ready to make my small contribution to this great cause.”
Hassan Rouhani expressed gratitude for the warm welcome. “Fortunately, very close relations have been established between Armenia and Iran for centuries. I am very happy that Armenia is presiding over a very important event today, and I am the guest of that event, ”he said.
The Presidents of the two countries agreed that the cooperation has a huge untapped potential. They noted that the visa-free regime has contributed to the development of bilateral ties and tourism. They attached importance to the effective work of free economic zones in the development of trade and economic ties.
Noting that Armenia has a great potential for clean energy, President Sargsyan said that cooperation in the energy sector could be much wider, and suggested that more attention be paid to these areas, especially as Iran has great success in the field of solar energy.
Referring to the transport sector, the Armenian President noted that by modernizing the highway connecting Armenia with Iran, the transportation will significantly increase.
The interlocutors hailed the importance of the Iranian-Armenian community, emphasizing its great role in strengthening the bilateral interstate relations.
