Armenia’s Euro-association project is the country’s sovereign right, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told a press briefing, TASS reports.
At the same time, he emphasized that participation in the Eurasian Economic Union benefits not only Armenia as a state, but also the people of the country.
Peskov said Armenia is unlikely to be able to be in both the European Union (EU) and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) at the same time.
“It is simply impossible to be members of two different organizations, hypothetically speaking. There is one customs area, one zone of free movement of goods and services, people and capital, there are different norms,” the Kremlin Spokesman said.
He added that it is difficult to assess the significance of Armenia’s possible membership in the EU. “It depends on what the Armenian side emphasizes,” Peskov said.
He noted that the European Union independently initiates membership processes in the association, therefore it is necessary to wait for Brussels’ reaction to Armenia’s initiative to join the EU.
“We know that it is the European Union that initiates membership processes. Here we need to understand the position of the European Union on the matter,” the Kremlin representative said.
Earlier today the Armenian government greenlighted the draft law on the launch of the process of Armenia’s accession to the European Union. The bill will now be sent to the National Assembly for consideration.
