The decision to grant political asylum to Bashar al-Assad and his family was made by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told journalists.
“Of course, such decisions cannot be made without the head of state. This is his decision,” the spokesman said.
Dmitry Peskov declined to elaborate on when Assad arrived in Moscow, stating, “I have nothing to say on this.”
The Kremlin says it will discuss the status of Russia’s two military bases in Syria with the country’s new rulers.
Asked about the future of the bases, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: “It is too early to say. This is a subject for discussion with whoever is going to be in power in Syria.”
