Armenia to open Embassy in Hungary

The Armenian Government today approved a decision to open an Embassy in Hungary.

Armenian and Hungarian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Péter Szijjártó agreed to restore diplomatic relations during a meeting on the margins of the OSCE Ministerial Council in Łódź in December 22.

The decision was followed by high-level visits and meetings within the framework of international platforms.

According to the Government, Hungary is of great importance for Armenia as an EU member state.

“Armenia emphasizes the importance of relations with Hungary and will continue to work with the Hungarian government to develop mutually beneficial bilateral cooperation and constructive dialogue between the two countries,” the Government says.

Armenia severed diplomatic ties with Hungary in August 2012 after the release of an Azerbaijani army officer convicted of murdering an Armenian soldier.

The Azerbaijani serviceman, Ramil Safarov, was given a life sentence for hacking Armenian Gurgen Markarian to death with an axe in 2004 in Budapest.

Safarov was eventually flown to Baku and pardoned, despite Baku’s assurances that his sentence would be enforced.
