President of Uruguay’s House of Representatives visits Armenian Genocide Memorial

Ana Olivera, President of the House of Representatives of Uruguay, and House Vice-President Pedro Khisdonyan visited the Armenian Genocide Memorial on August 29, accompanied by Sargis Khandanyan, Chairman of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Foreign Relations, and Mariam Gevorgyan, Armenia’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Uruguay.

Lusine Abrahamyan, Deputy Director of the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute, briefed the guests on the history of creation of the memorial. She also referred to the three cross-stones (khachkars) placed in memory of the Armenians who died in the massacres organized by the Azerbaijani government in Sumgait, Kirovabad (Gandzak), Baku late last century, as well as the stories of the five freedom fighters buried in front of the Memorial Wall (Hushapat) during the Artsakh War.

Mrs. Ana Olivera laid a wreath at the memorial to the victims of the Armenian Genocide, then the guests placed flowers near the eternal fire and paid homage to the memory of the innocent victims of the Armenian Genocide with a moment of silence. The members of the delegation also toured the Armenian Genocide Museum and left notes in the memorial book of Honored Guests.
