Armenian, Azerbaijani FMs discuss Karabakh peace process

Armenian Foreign Minister Zohrab Mnatsakanyan and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov held a meeting in New York mediated by the the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs Igor Popov (Russia), Stefan Visconti (France), Andrew Shoffer (US). Andrzej Kasprzyk, Personal Representative of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office, also participated in the meeting.

The interlocutors discussed a wide range of issues related to the peaceful settlement of the Karabakh conflict and assessed the current situation.

The Armenian Foreign Minister hailed the activity of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs and the Personal Representative of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office.

The Armenian side attached importance to taking steps to reinforce the ceasefire and reduce tension, including through implementation and application of corresponding mechanisms.

The need for consistent steps to build an atmosphere of confidence was also emphasized, including through the implementation of previously achieved arrangements.

Concerning the Armenian citizens detained on the territory of Azerbaijan, the Armenian side emphasized the necessity of ensuring their repatriation.

From the point of view of promoting the peace process, Minister Mnatsakanyan attached importance to ensuring proportionality of the commitments undertaken by the parties in the settlement process, reaffirming Armenia’s principled position and approaches in the process.

The parties outlined further steps in this direction, including the visit of the co-chairs to the region and a regular meeting of foreign ministers in the near future.
