France and Mexico welcome Armenia’s decision to commit to regulating the Security Council’s veto power in cases of mass atrocities, the French Foreign Ministry said in a statement
“This announcement demonstrates its commitment to effective multilateralism and supports the Security Council’s ability to act in such situations,” the Foreign Ministry said.
France, which will assume the Security Council’s one-month presidency starting April 1, pledged in 2015 not to use its veto power in cases of mass atrocities.
The initiative, which France has been jointly promoting with Mexico since the same year, is supported by 107 states. It will celebrate its 10th anniversary this year, during the high-level week of the 80th United Nations General Assembly.
