Climate activists at the COP29 summit held a silent protest on Monday, November 11, saying the United Nations did not allow them to chant or make speeches, Reuters reports.
The protesters complained about not being able to demonstrate in the streets for the third COP summit in a row due to what they said were restrictions on freedom of speech by host countries. They said they were doing their best to have their voices heard in the areas they were designated by authorities.
The group of activists from various international organizations demanded an end to the war in Gaza, saying climate justice cannot be achieved while the conflict continues.
The annual UN climate summit began on Monday with some prominent leaders planning to skip the event ahead of tough talks on finance and trade, after a year of weather disasters that have emboldened developing countries’ demands for cash.
